DTE Energy modernizes outage communications with UiPath Test Cloud

People discussing in office

As part of a large-scale modernization initiative, DTE began migrating its outage communication ecosystem from legacy, on-premise systems to Microsoft Azure. The objective of this transition was to improve scalability, agility, and reliability across customer-facing outage communication services.

Modernizing mission-critical outage communications

Outage communications represent some of DTE Energy’s most critical customer interactions. Notifications such as email and SMS messages, backend system updates, and outage map refreshes must operate with a high degree of reliability, especially during high-volume weather events.

Over time, DTE’s outage notification capabilities evolved into a complex ecosystem spanning customer communications, backend processing engines, and outage-mapping integrations. Migrating this interconnected environment to Azure required architectural redesign as well as comprehensive validation across systems operating in both legacy and cloud platforms.

DTE’s delivery management team led a comprehensive re-architecture of the outage communication environment, including customer notifications, backend processing logic, mapping integrations, and cross-system workflows.

Manual testing alone could not provide the scale or consistency required for this type of modernization. To support the migration, DTE Energy integrated UiPath Test Cloud into its testing strategy, enabling automation across critical outage communication workflows.

Using UiPath Test Cloud, DTE implemented automated validation for:

  • End-to-end outage communication workflows, including email and SMS

  • Backend outage-processing system checks

  • Outage mapping and visualization integrations

  • Regression testing during cloud migration cycles

  • Interface testing across Azure-based services and legacy systems

By leveraging Test Cloud’s scalable execution environment, DTE was able to execute regression testing more efficiently, validate Azure-based services on an ongoing basis, and support hybrid testing across both legacy and cloud environments.

Automation extended beyond test execution. The team introduced automated test data generation and scenario simulation to model outage events and high-volume customer interactions. This helped transform testing from a resource-intensive activity into a more scalable and repeatable capability aligned with modern cloud delivery.

As we modernized our outage communication systems and moved critical workloads to Azure, automated testing became essential. UiPath Test Cloud enabled us to scale validation across complex, end-to-end outage scenarios, including customer communications, backend processing, and system integrations. Embedding test automation into our migration approach helped reduce manual effort and supported a smoother, lower-risk transition to the cloud.”

Outcomes

  • Accelerated testing cycles: Automated, end-to-end outage communication testing supported faster validation and helped accelerate Azure release timelines. The core regression test model, comprised of hundreds of test scenarios, can be executed in less than ten minutes!

  • Expanded test coverage: Regression and interface testing provided consistent validation across both legacy platforms and Azure-based services.

  • Reduced manual effort: Automated execution, test data management, and scenario simulation reduced repetitive manual testing activities.

  • Stable cloud migration: Ongoing automated verification supported a smooth transition to Azure without disruption to customer outage notifications.

Building a repeatable testing framework for the future

With UiPath Test Cloud integrated into its modernization efforts, DTE Energy established a repeatable and scalable quality assurance framework that extends beyond the initial migration.

Automated testing is now embedded into the development lifecycle, enabling:

  • Continuous validation of Azure-based services

  • Faster feedback cycles for future releases

  • Reduced risk during high-volume outage periods

  • Greater confidence in customer-facing communication systems

Testing has evolved from a reactive activity to a proactive, automated capability aligned with DTE’s long-term cloud strategy.

From modernization initiative to long-term capability

DTE’s experience demonstrates how utilities can evolve testing from a manual safeguard into a scalable enabler of modernization. By integrating UiPath Test Cloud, DTE reduced migration risk while establishing a quality foundation to support ongoing innovation.

Automation allowed us to expand our testing coverage without scaling manual effort. As we continue modernizing in Azure, having automated testing embedded into our process has become an important part of how we deliver reliable systems.”

— John Vichinsky, Delivery Manager, DTE Energy

Scalable, automated testing is now a key component supporting DTE Energy’s outage communication systems. What began as a migration initiative has helped establish a sustainable quality framework strengthening operational resilience and supporting consistent, reliable customer communications as DTE continues its digital transformation.
